Read on to learn what the State of Iowa requires before they will issue a real estate license. Be sure to review and understand all requirements thoroughly before taking the pre-license education and licensing examination. Eligibility for an Iowa Real Estate License

  • Every salesperson must have a background check.
  • Be at least 18 years of age or older
  • May be required to provide proof of citizenship
  • You could be denied a license IF:
    • You have had an application for licensing rejected in another state or jurisdiction within the past 12 months
    • You have had a real estate license revoked within the past 2 years
    • You have had any professional license revoked in the past in any state or jurisdiction
    • You have committed and been convicted of certain crimes such as embezzlement or forgery

Requirements for Earning a Salesperson License

  • The IREC defines a salesperson as “a person who is licensed under and employed by or otherwise associated with a real estate broker or firm”
  • Education Requirements:
  • Pass License Examination
    • Conducted by IREC or an authorized representative
    • Must produce evidence that you have completed the 60 hour pre-license course
    • OR provide a letter from the IREC granting a substitution, waiver, or variance
  • Other requirements:
    • Submit application to Iowa State Real Estate Commission
    • Pay $125 licensing fee ($170 for Brokers)
    • Provide proof of Errors and Omissions insurance coverage in Iowa.
    • Complete 3 12-hour Classroom courses covering Buying Practices, Listing Practices, and Developing Professionalism and Ethical Practices
    • Find a licensed broker to sponsor you

After Obtaining a Salesperson License

  • Continuing Education Requirements:
    • 36 hours of approved courses including:
      • 8 hours - Law update
      • 4 hours - Ethics
      • 24 hours - Electives
      • Complete no more than the required 36 hours
      • Education must be completed within the 3 years of the license term and cannot be carried over to another term
  • Renew license every 3 years by December 31 st of the 3 rd year
  • Without continuing education, license can only be renewed as inactive
    • To regain active status – must provide evidence of completed continuing education

Requirements to Earn a Broker’s License

  • Experience Requirements:
    • Must have been a licensed active real estate salesperson for at least 2 years prior to the application date
      • Equivalent experience can also be accepted
  • Education Requirements:
    • 72 hour Broker’s Course in a classroom/online
    • Must be completed during the 24 months prior to taking the exam
  • Pass License Examination
  • Test provided by PSI
