Step 1 (Obtaining a Salesperson License):
- Kansas desires applicants who are honest, trustworthy, full of integrity, and will conduct business in a competent manner
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Hold a high school diploma or its equivalent
- Education:
- Examination:
- Pass both national and state portions
- Must pass the exam within 1 year of finishing pre-licensing education
- File License Application:
- File application within four months of passing the exam
- If you passed the two sections on different dates, the four months begins from when you passed the first section
- Application must be signed by the supervising broker
- Broker is responsible for your activities
- By signing, the broker is saying that you are honest, trustworthy, and of good reputation
- License cannot be issued as inactive
- If you are a not a Kansas resident:
- You must file a nonresident form with your application
- Available from the KREC at (785) 296-3411 or visit their website at Kansas Real Estate Commission
- If you hold a license in another state or jurisdiction:
- You must file a current certification of license with your application
Step 2 (After Obtaining a Salesperson License):
- Post Licensing Education:
- 30 hour course titled “Salesperson’s Post-License Course”
- Course must be approved by the KREC
- Course can be taken in a classroom/online
- Must be taken by both residents and nonresidents
- Course must be completed AFTER you receive your temporary license and at least 10 days before the license expiration date
- Must take 30 hours of post licensing education by the first renewal date
- Continuing Education:
- 12 hours of continuing education
- Course must be approved by the KREC
- Course can be taken in a classroom/online
- Must be taken by both residents and nonresidents
- Take an additional 12 hours of continuing education every 2 years for license renewal after the first renewal
- Application for Standard License:
- Application will be sent to your home about 45 days before your temporary license expires
- Send in application for standard license along with the certificate of course completion
- Any questions:
Step 3 (Obtaining a Broker’s License):
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Hold a high school diploma or its equivalent
- Experience Requirement:
- Be a active licensed salesperson for 2 of the last 5 years in Kansas or another state or jurisdiction
- Experience in the business field but not as a licensed salesperson could be applicable for the broker experience requirement
- Only experience within the last 5 years will be considered
- Experience is evaluated on a case by case basis by KREC

- 24 hour course titled “Broker’s Pre-License Course”
- Course must be approved by the KREC
- Course can be taken in a classroom/online
- Examination:
- Pass both national and state portions

- Application must include evidence of experience
- File application within four months of passing the exam
- If you passed the two sections on different dates, the four months begins from when you passed the first section
- Application must be signed by the supervising broker if you are not going to be the supervising broker

- By signing, the broker is saying that you are honest, trustworthy, and of good reputation
- License cannot be issued as inactive
