Obtaining a Salesperson License
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Complete VREC approved pre-licensing course
- 60 hours in a classroom/online
- Approved course available through Real Estate Express
- Pass Virginia Real Estate Examination
- Both State and National portions
Education requirements after earning Salesperson License
- First Renewal Period:
- Effective July 1, 2013 the New Single-Track Post-License Education (PLE IT) goes into effect. The 30-hour PLE IT program consists of eight courses.
- Fair Housing, ADA and Civil Rights (2 hours)
- Real Estate Law and Regulations (8 hours)
- Ethics and Standards of Conduct (3 hours)
- Current Industry Issues and Trends (2 hours)
- Agency Laws (3 hours)
- Contract Writing (6 hours)
- Risk Management (3 hours)
- Escrow Requirements (3 hours)
- All Other Renewal Periods
- Complete 16 hour approved Continuing Education courses
- 8 Hours Minimum Required Courses:
- Fair Housing - 2 hours
- Ethics and Standard of Conduct - 3 hours
- Legal Updates and Emerging Trends - 1 hour
- Real Estate Agency - 1 hour
- Real Estate Contracts - 1 hour
- 8 Hours Elective Courses:
- Approved VREC Board elective courses
Residential Standard Agency Requirement
- In addition to all continuing education and post-licensing requirements, ALL LICENSEES who renew, reinstate or Add this activate a salesperson or broker license must complete a new 3-hour Residential Standard Agency Course.
- This is a one-time only requirement to renew licenses that expire between July 31, 2012 and June 30, 2014.
Obtaining a Broker’s License
- Be an active salesperson for 3 of the last 4 years before applying for a broker’s license
- Complete VREC approved pre-licensing education
- 180 hours in a classroom/online
- Pass Virginia Real Estate Broker Examination
- Both State and National portions
- Present proof of salesperson experience
Education Requirements after Obtaining a Broker’s License
- All Renewal Periods (Including if the license is moving from inactive to active):
- Complete 24 hours of approved Continuing Education
- 6 Hours Minimum Required Courses:
- Broker Management and Agent Supervision - 8 hours
- Ethics and Standards of Conduct - 3 hours
- Fair Housing - 2 hours
- Leqal Updates and Emerging Trends - 1 hour
- Real Estate Agency - 1 hour
- Real Estate Contracts - 1 hour
- 8 hours Elective Courses
